CTFA Bosses Resign Amid National Team Fallout

Two days after the National Sports Department ordered the CTFA to present a comprehensive self-report, specifically in regard to its operating procedures, at least one major figure from the Taiwanese football’s governing body has decided to resign.

Wang Lin-xiang, the organization’s chairman, has announced that he will voluntarily leave his position following the very public resignation of the mens national team coach on Tuesday night. It is understood that Cai Hong-yi, the deputy security general in charge of the national teams will also resign.

Amid mounting anger at the CTFA’s handling of the national team set-up, more stories continue to enter the public domain. On Thursday, Chan Hui-ming, the former women’s national team coach– who also resigned following his own battles with the CTFA– aired his opinions about the organization on Threads.

Specifically referencing the cancelation of the recent women’s home game with New Zealand due to subpar facilities, Chan alleged he was intentionally left out of the decision to cancel the game itself.

Chan also alleged that some administrators spread false rumors implying that the manager intentionally stayed away from this meeting so that the game would get suspended and Chan could avoid losing a much-hyped home match.

The CTFA has also now attempted some damage control amid the growing outcry. In a statement released to the press, it said in part;

“Following an internal meeting, the association has initiated an internal review and organizational adjustments, including a comprehensive review of the team’s administrative operations, personnel divisions, and management processes. Current CFA staff will undergo position adjustments and personnel replacements to ensure more comprehensive and professional support operations”

In recent days, the organization has also noted a need to overhaul its policies but also stressed that it is working with serious financial constraints.

In 2023, it was discovered that the CTFA was in roughly NTD 90-100 million ($3.2 USD) of debt after it approached the Taiwanese government for a bail-out. Instead lawmakers criticized the CTFA for going into so much debt and the organization was forced to adopt many cost-saving measures to bring its finances under control.

As recently as this year, the Taiwanese government withheld a NTD 3-million grant to the CTFA as punishment for the botched cancelation of the Taiwan vs. New Zealand home game.

Right now, the Sports Department has not made further comment but that may change once after it has reviewed the CTFA procedural self-assessment. The deadline for the report’s submission to the Sports Department is Friday, October 17th.
