Womens’ Head Coach Quits Amid Major Fall-Out

In an unexpected development, Chan Hiu Ming, the manager of the women’s national team, abruptly resigned over the weekend.

In a lengthy post on Instagram, Chan explained that he lacked proper support from the relevant bodies within Taiwanese football and had no choice but to leave the job. Critically, he made the following statement;

“The 2026 Asia Cup will be held in March next year, and it is related to the 2027 World Cup qualification[.] The preparations will not happen overnight and need to start soon. However, in the process of developing a training plan for the next stage of the Asian Cup 2026, I have failed to reach effective communication and consensus with the relevant departments in terms of resource allocation and personnel collaboration, and there is a significant gap with my professional requirements”.

Chan’s resignation is a major setback for the women’s team. Having arrived in 2023, the Hong Kong native helped guide the Mulan to their first five-game winning streak since 2016. As well as qualifying for the 2026 AFC Finals, multiple players improved under Chan’s management, most notably key striker, Su Yu-hsuan.

But Chan’s spell also coincided with some controversial moments. Most notably, there was the cancelation of the Mulan’s first home game in almost six years due to subpar playing facilities. There was the Pintar Cup tour, wherein Taiwan’s players were flown over to Europe with little time to get in game shape. In the build up to the AFC qualification, the womens’ players union also released a statement criticizing the inflexible travel itinerary and risking player burn-out.

According to Gogoal.com, the CTFA will likely hire a local coach to take over but time is running out to rescue the situation.
